Como, Lombardy in Italy
Como is a city and a commune of the Lombardy region in Italy. Being the capital of the Como province, Como is also it most visited place. Located near the Lake Como and the Alps, the city is an attractive tourist destination both in summer and in winter. Total population is of about 85,000 people, but during the season it varies greatly due to the tourist inflow. Tourist industry is a key of the local budget.
The city of Como leads it history from the Bronze Age, when this territory was inhabited by the Celtic tribes. In the 1st century BC in was captured by the Romans. Many famous conquerors influenced the history of Como. Charlemagne captured the city in 774, Frederick Barbarossa helped locals to defeat their rival Milan in 1162. But from that time Como was a part of French and Spanish Empires until 1714, when Austrian Empire invaded the city. In was also part of the Napoleon Empire from 1796 till 1815. Under the decision of the Vienna Congress it became Austrian again until Garibaldi freed it in 1859 and established Kingdom of Italy.
Due to its rich historical past Como can please it visitors with lots of architectural monuments of different epochs. The main sights of Como are Como Cathedral, Broletto toawn hall, San Fedele Romanesque church, basilica of Sant’Abbondio, Monumento di caduti, Teatro Sociale, ancient walls and the medieval castle of Baradello. For sure a big attraction is the lake Como with it wonderfull view of landscape and its great chances for watersports like swimming, water-ski or even a holiday on a sailship.
